*Building your Sauna without a Platform: our platforms are insulated with 3” rigid foam and sealed to increases the floor-level temperature of your sauna. If you choose to build without a platform, your sauna will sit on a leveled and graveled site on top of a concealed pressure treated base, providing a natural flooring environment.
*Factors to Consider With Insulation: We find organic sheep’s wool to be the safest and most durable option for the humid environment of a sauna, so we use Havlock loose fill Sheep’s wool. Insulation improves heat retention and reduces the warm-up time of your sauna in general, and especially so in colder climates. For reference, When the Huum Hive 17 wood stove and insulation are combined, it takes about 15 minutes to start producing steam and 30 minutes to bring the sauna to your desired temperature. Your style of flooring (platform, gravel, earth floor, etc.) will also influence the warm-up time, heat retention and distribution of your sauna.
*Huum Hive 17 Wood Stove: this stove is rated to warm an area slightly larger than the sauna interior, which reduces warm-up time and decreases stress on the stove. It is certainly not the only stove that is suitable for this sauna, but it is the one we find to be most functionally and aesthetically suitable for our saunas.
